MAHIKAI ARK
An ethnographic audio sculpture specialising on The Great Pacific Ocean sounds and fusion, tracing the eternal Afro-Sonic Signifiers: coined by Satch Hoyts, in the blue region.
She is our first sonical orchid, born out of experimentation of music affecting the physicality of the audio apparatus.
Inspired by the genre that is commonly called Pacific “island vibe” which encompasses between Sounds of African diaspora, and Pacific Ritual Gathering Continuum.
Mahikai were built in a hope that she will bring new nuance to audience in listening experience, and comfort in difference cultural settings. The wood earthy exteriors are designed to mimic the variety of Pacific’s wood instrumentations as part of ritual: ceremony continuum.
After 2 years of research and peer learning, we launched our first crowdfunding to build Mahikai in the mid of 2023. It took us 2 months to build, and we workshopped her in Mahikai Lab-our own backyard, located in inner western suburbia, Sunshine, Naarm. Then, she has been singing her first song at Mamma Chen’s, the place to be.
She has never stop singing ever since.
Mahikai Ark has 2 different configurations to accomodate sound experience in difference settings:
🐢 Mahikai Teteruga: turtle – A mini version of Mahikai Ark, with 2 way midtops paired with our cubos for indoor, and intimate listening space.
🐍Mahikai Tower, a taller version bottommed with dual 15″ sub boxes for outdoor and festival.
Below is our new upcycle design: a work of reciprocity with our Malay Pacific member, called “Galangal Serenade”. Made from restored piezo horn and Her Master’s Voice 2 ways.
